I saw a squirrel in town today
I saw a squirrel in town today
‘Twas not like any squirrel I’d seen
Before or ever will again,
For sure, this squirrel looked mean.
I asked him what the trouble was
But from him received no reply;
His furrowed brow kept to the ground,
His tail aimed at the sky.
I felt it rude as this old squirrel
Casually ignored my question,
But followed him across the road,
Without apprehension.
I stood and stared and watched the squirrel
As he flopped over on his back;
In all my years I’d never seen
A creature more relaxed.
I pressed again, “What’s the problem?”
My interest now was fully piqued.
Once again, the churlish rodent
Pretended he heard no one speak.
I did my best to stay composed –
The gall of such a tiny critter!
But as I turned, I became unnerved,
By a stare so cold, so bitter.
Seeing I’d made a grave mistake,
I glanced back in disbelief.
There stood the squirrel, furry arms crossed,
Indignantly preparing to speak his grief.
“This mornin’ as I left the tree,
I had a snack and kissed my girl.
I came home early – what do I see? –
But her messin’ around with another squirrel!
“I said, ‘Wretch, why have you done this?’
And looked them over in disgust.
She just mumbled, ‘Chuck, I’m sorry –
Bob here’s got the biggest nuts.’”
And so today my view did change
Of squirrels and Chuck who looked so mean.
After that I walked home quickly
To check in on Darlene.
